Today’s guest on the blog is Susan Child, Australian paranormal author of More Than Friends and Smash.

                                                        

When Susan was in high school, she never really liked to read, but when she was a child she did. Go figure. It wasn’t until after she graduated that she caught the reading bug.  Susan had to go to a book store to sell off her text books and a particular book caught her eye. This book stood out from the other second-hand books because it had a pink cover. It was only a couple of dollars, so she thought, “Why not?” But she couldn’t quite bring herself to read her bargain book. It had a pink cover!
Then, after it tormented her for three weeks, she finally picked it up and… could not put it down. Susan finished it in two days!
After Google-ing the author and found that she’d written a heap of books for Harlequin Mills & Boon as well as Single Titles. So of course Susan had to buy all her other books! And when she realised that there were other Mills & Boon authors out there, she just had to search out their books, too. And she loved them!
Susan got a ton of inspiration from those books. But the most important thing she realized was that she wanted to write those books, too. She wanted to be a Paranormal author! Because let’s face it, who doesn’t like things that go bump in the night?

What was the last book you bought?

Good question! I buy books all the time! From memory, I think it was Shannon Stacey.

Do you prefer to read books in print or electronically?

Both, always both.

If I was to walk into your house right now, what would your bookshelves look like? Do you have an organisation system (genre, colour, author…) or are you just happy to go with the flow?

Definitely go with the flow!  I tried organising it, but that didn’t last long LOL! If there’s space, I push the books in and make them fit.

 

How often do you read?

I try to read every day, but with a busy day job, deadlines and editing, it’s hard.

 

Describe what you would expect to find in your dream book?

A HEA! I read a lot of genres, as long as there’s a HEA and romance in it, it’s my dream book =)

How do you choose what to read next?

I don’t like reading the same genre after each other, nor do I like to read the next book in the series. I mix it up a bit by reading contemporary, then paranormal, then erotica, BDSM, contemporary, sci-fi… You get the idea! The book has to grab my attention, or if it’s been recommended by someone, then I’ll read it =)

So you’ve started a book and discover it’s not for you. Are you more likely to discard it or finish it?

Discard it. I’ve got so many books to read and write that I just don’t have the time to finish something I’m not enjoying.

 

If you could read any book again, for the first time, what book would you choose?

Twilight, that series got me back into reading years ago. I would also read JR Ward’s BDB series, that got me into writing paranormal =)

  

What is about books that appeals to you so much? What is your favourite part about reading?

I love the escapism from reality. Keeping in mind, there are some books that I think ‘I wouldn’t have done that’ or ‘Why go back to him knowing he did that?’ etc. sometimes it’s not realistic and that’s a major downer. But I love opening the cover (or hitting the next button on my tablet) and getting swept up in the world that that author has made for their readers.

 

Was there any particular book that inspired you to start writing?

Maureen Child – A Crazy Kind Of love.

I read that book and wanted my name next to hers on a book. So I emailed her, and she emailed me back about a month later with some great advice.

Do you have any advice to other writers out there?

Keep writing. Don’t stop writing. Do what makes you happy. Screw reviews – even though they help us with rankings.

And lastly, what are you currently working on?

Two anthologies, one is a friends-to-lovers story and another is a biker chicks anthology. Both anthologies have charities where all proceeds will go to.

I’m super excited about it and I hope I can reach my deadline!
