Roaming the lands: Pisa, Italy

So I am finally sitting down and writing my first real post! Well, I wanted to document my travels so I can remember when I’m old and wrinkly (hopefully that will be a long time to come). Disregarding the travels in my earlier years (which I can hardly remember now), I will start with this trip while I was doing my internship in Italy almost three years ago.

3 years! I am so old already!! No wonder my memory’s going! How long will it be till I get wrinkles? Do I have wrinkles already?? How long until….

Anyway.

So the four of us (with my friends Awatif, Raj and Ron) decided to go to Pisa, which was not far from Florence, where we were staying. Of course the object of our attention was the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Now, you can Google it up for yourself, but I still want to share the facts about the tower that I find most interesting:

  • the cause of its tilt was because the ground was too soft (credit goes to my Geophysics Dad who got me interested in these kind of facts)
  • to compensate for the tilt, the upper floors of one side were built taller than the other, so the tower’s actually curved!

Seems like an academic post right off the bat. Hey, I’m just trying to make these posts more informative! Okay, the other boring facts you can get from Wiki.

The tower is in a square called Piazza Del Duomo (Pisa’s Cathedral Square). I don’t know about other people, but before most of the pictures of the tower I see give the impression that it is the only thing of interest in the vicinity. However…

They’re all beautiful buildings actually. The Camposanto (Cemetery) is behind these buildings, the edge only visible in the above picture.

Is it okay to lie down like this in front of the Baptistery?

There were loads of souvenirs sold there, and a certain someone got snap-happy taking photos of the tower on boxer shorts (people of age would know what I mean). In case anyone is wondering, yeeeeeees, we did take the cliché photos with the tower, but I think I’m keeping the silly photos for myself. This post is so long as it is. Till next time~
