Ya Vendra- Spanish-Portuguese Pizmon

Ya Vendra is a pizmon (Song) sung by Spanish and Portuguese Jews. It was originally written in Tangiers but the song rose to prominence in the middle of the 1600s with the rise of the Sabbatai’s Tsvi’s messianic movement which spread throughout Spanish and Portuguese communities comprised of former Conversos. The song was included the Amsterdam’s collection of Shir Emumim (Songs of Faith) at the end of the 18th century and sung at the end of the Sabbath (Shabbat).

The lyrics of this shortened version read:

Ya vendra el Senor de la redencion
A dezir a todos vamos a Sion.

Besorot tovot esperamos nos vendra
A poco a poco se sentiran.
Eliyahu Navi se aparecera
Para alvrisyar a hijis de Sion.

Ya vendra Mose el pastor neeman
Que por su zechut descendio el man.
