Freedom of Expression

CTV News crew on Place Jacques Cartier, Montréal 2001-05-30

Having lived under a dictatorship for nine years of my life has trained me to be careful of what I say and to whom. Because of this, I used to view freedom of expression as a luxury.

The chance to be the first to communicate to the world the news happening now, to cover that perfect story, to broadcast the breaking news the way you see it to the billions of viewers all over the world is freedom of expression.

You can express yourself in many ways; it could be through the way you dress, the way you walk, or the things you do. For instance, I enjoy expressing myself through photography, looking to capture the perfect moment with the right amount of light.

Many people express themselves through writing – but when does it go too far? Does freedom of expression give you the right to limit others and their freedom to express themselves as they wish?

    Nice shots.

Freedom of expression is the freedom to express ones self in a way that hopefully benefits others; and if not, it’s your choice. However, I don’t think expression of opinions or otherwise inherently has the power to limit others. If you’re being limited, it’s of your own accord. Being free to act, good or bad, is a persons on choice. Do what you want IMO, just be prepared to own up to it socially, legally, etc.

I would agree with your opinion if I had also lived my full life in a democratic world where freedom of expression is a right. However I have experienced communism and dictatorship where freedom of expression could mean loosing your life. If that is not limitation, I don’t know what is

My rights end where yours begin.
