Today the Broadband Task Force met at CommScope, a telecommunications manufacturing company. They hear about what CommScope is seeing today and predicting for the future for networks.

They also talked about the recent Legislative activity. The House and the Senate have agreed on $35 million for broadband grants, telecom reform and advantageous changes to railroad crossing regulation. Below are the video updates on ach topic…

Read on for full notes…

The Task Force celebrates $35 million in the Legislature…

10:15 a.m. – 10:35 a.m. Welcome and What is CommScope

  • Jaxon Lang, Senior Vice President, PLM, Connectivity Solutions, CommScope

We got a nice introduction to CommScope – a quick explanation “when you send email, that message hits CommScope equipment at some point. And I’m going to cheat and borrow the video from their website:

10:35 a.m.—11:30 a.m. Broadband market place trends

  • Morgan Kurk, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, CommScope
  • Trevor Smith, Vice President, Office of the CTO, CommScope

My notes are a little hodgepodge, I’ll include pictures of the slides…

And notes…

Technology has changed.

Costs are lowering – just look at something like storage

The last foot of the network is going wireless. Mobility is essential. But it’s the last mile of a converged network.

Top Trends Shaping Networks Today:

  1. Universal mobility
  2. Cloud services
  3. Video bandwidth explosion

Top Trends Shaping Networks Tomorrow:

  1. Everything connected
  2. Decision engine (like artificial intelligence)
  3. Virtualization

What predicts broadband upgrades from incumbents?

  • Competitive environment
  • Clear and consistent regulation
  • Access to right capital

Google is smart – they build a business case for fiber, then they go to the regulators and tell them how it can happen.

11:30 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. Update from the Office of Broadband Development and Update on 2016 Legislative Session

(See videos above)

11:50 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Update from Subcommittees – ran out of time
