I’ve recently been re-enlightened with the possibilities of what I can do as a blogger and vlogger, in light of my extensive sexuality education, experience and “expertise”.

There are dozens of things I have planned for you all out there, but for now, I just wanted to introduce myself as your new exclusive sex educator!

One of two upcoming things to look forward to is my daily #EverythingShaq #SexFacts, informing or refreshing your knowledge of basic and complex facts about sex, sexuality, sexual reproductive health theories, history and movements, as well as, information about sexual reproductive health care.

The second upcoming thing is an ongoing series of posts and discussions about all things sex that no one will talk about, acknowledge or ask. The first topic up is the debate about whether or not people with vaginas can ejaculate and what correlation, if any, that might have to male privilege. So stay tuned and look forward to that!

For right now, I will start you off with some need to know info about different forms of protection that prevent against sexually transmitted infections. Each form of protection is divided by intercourse or sex type, such as anal, oral and vaginal sex. Thus, I am also going to define each type of intercourse or “sex act”, just to make sure we’re all on the same page in this conversation.

Just so we’re clear, these are my personal definitions, compiled based on years of sexual education, training and knowledge and my best judgement on how to represent that for the purpose of describing these facts.

Vaginal Intercourse: When a penis penetrates or is put inside of a vagina. Often referred to as “regular” sex (though, there truthfully is no form of “regular” sex, as the variation in what is considered a sexual act, outside of these commonly referred acts, is more broad and eclectic, than taught).

• Male condom: A latex, plastic (e.g. nitrile) or animal skin (lamb skin) sheath used to tightly cover the penis, also referred to colloquially as, a “dick”. It is meant to work as a barrier or blockage way, to stop sperm from getting into the vagina, mouth or anus. The male condom also, unlike most other forms of protection, works simultaneously, or at the same time, to prevent pregnancy or the transfer of sexually transmitted infections or diseases which are commonly spread vaginally (like Chlamydia and HIV)! It and the female condom are the only methods that can be used as a back up to birth control to prevent pregnancy.
• Female Condom*: Apparently commonly referred to as a pouch, I would more accurately describe the female condom as a cylinder shaped plastic type (e.g. nitrile) sleeve, used to be inserted into the vaginal canal, or the vagina, as many call it. It is also meant to work as a barrier to stop sperm from getting into the vagina, helping prevent the spread of vaginal sexually transmitted infections, which are commonly spread vaginally. The female and male condom are the only back up methods that can be used as the same time as contraception, or birth control, to prevent pregnancy.

Oral Intercourse: Mouth to genitals- When a person places their mouth on a person’s penis, anus or vulva, often referred to as a vagina. Often excluded from consideration of “real” sex and mistakenly thought to not spread STI’s, though you CAN get STI’s through giving or receiving oral sex.

• Male Condom: A latex, plastic (e.g. nitrile) or animal skin (lamb skin) sheath used to tightly cover the penis, also referred to colloquially as, a “dick”. It is meant to work as a barrier or blockage way, to stop sperm from getting into the mouth, which helps prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections like Herpes and Syphilis, which are commonly spread orally.
• Dental Dam: Similar to what everyone knows as one of the famous unofficial purposes for saran wrap, dental dams are a thin square or rectangular latex cover. They are meant to be a barrier between the mouth/ tongue and vulva, commonly referred to as a vagina, or the anus to prevent the spread of sexual transmitted infections like Herpes and oral Gonorrhea, which are commonly spread orally.
  • Dental Dams can also be made from saran wrap and a female or male condom cut in half.

Anal Intercourse: Penis to Anus- When a person with a penis penetrates or inserts their penis into another person’s anus (the butt). Anal sex is a far more common form of sexual intercourse used within all types of relationships, though it is commonly shamed and infrequently taught about. It vitally requires protection such as a condom and a lot of lubricant, as the anus does not naturally get as wet as a vagina and thus, is more likely to tear, and as a result, bleed (which increases your chances of transferring or getting blood spread viruses like HIV and Hepatitis B).

• Male Condom: A latex, plastic (e.g. nitrile) or animal skin (lamb skin) sheath used to tightly cover the penis, also referred to colloquially as, a “dick”. It is meant to work as a barrier or blockage way, to stop sperm from getting into the vagina, mouth or anus, which helps prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections like HIV and Hepatitis B, which are commonly spread anally.

• Female Condom*: Apparently commonly referred to as a pouch, I would more accurately describe the female condom as a cylinder shaped plastic type (e.g. nitrile) sleeve, with flexible oval rings at each end and only one closed end. It is also meant to work as a barrier to stop sperm from getting into the anus, helping prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections like HIV and Hepatitis B, which are commonly spread anally.
  • For anal intercourse, the ring inside the closed end of the sheath should be taken out first (as it is meant to keep the condom inside of a more elastic vessel like the vagina) and then, the condom can inserted into the anus more comfortably.
