Day 1 Year of Daily Art

2015-09-01 09.40.22 Day 1 straight

A young man’s face. Gesso and charcoal on card stock. 9×12 inches.

For this first day I write in English and in Dutch. Why Dutch? Because a Dutch saying came to me first when I finished.

English: Yeah, I did my first face! Was it hard? Yes and no.

I looked up a photo on a royalty free site. Wanted a front facing face of a young man. About the same age as the front facing face of the young woman I have been drawing a few days.

I used the technique with charcoal and gesso. Started with a light pencil drawing. It was a rough sketch. If I look at it now it is slightly younger than the photo reference as the face is a little bit more round. I took rather a precise approach to the eyes and mouth, didn’t want them to be as rough as the sketches on the photo of Frida Kahlo I did last week, where afterwards I noticed that the eyes were different, one looked like it was shut (or she had been beaten). Didn’t want that. I wanted a clean face. What a pity that I got all precise – it made me feel a bit tense in the shoulders. Can’t be helped. I am learning. That is a good thing. Tomorrow there’s another day. See you then!

Dutch/Nederlands:
Hoera.

Naschrift / edit September 25: Soon this painting will be in my Etsy shop. Be on the lookout for it.
