- The Whitney Biennial list is out. Lots of new artist names for this one and lots of political work. Looking forward to it. [The New York Times]
- Artist Caroline Woolard’s How the Art World Can Change for the Better During the Trump Years, includes a list of concrete ways to combat economic inequality. I dunno about some of the suggestions on this list. Holding a seminar for white liberals to bemoan their guilt over their privilege sounds like not the best use of time. Paying artists, interns and staff well is essential—but to do this we also have to figure out ways to make non-profits and for-profit businesses in the arts more sustainable. [Hyperallergic]
- ARTnews has released a mammoth feature in which it asks artists, curators and dealers how to “fix” the art world. The contributions of W.A.G.E. and Martha Wilson in particular seem useful. [ARTnews]
- Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Auction sale last night brought in $276.6 million, a total that exceeded its low estimate of $209 million. This sounds pretty good, and the press has been covering the results that way, but collector Alain Servais expressed reservations over twitter. Many of the major works came with irrevocable guarantees, meaning a third party pledged a bid prior to the auction to win the picture if other competition didn’t materialize. [Blouin ArtINFO]
- And this week was a 1 billion week in art sales. [Bloomberg]
