Otakon, one of America’s biggest anime conventions, opens Thursday in Baltimore. I’m super excited, though not for the same reasons as most people. Confession: I fall asleep almost every time someone tries to get me to watch an anime. I don’t know if that’s because of the slow frame rate or bad dubbing or something related to convoluted storylines—I just don’t have the attention span. But I love a good costume party, and Otakon (“Otaku” is more-or-less Japanese for “nerd”) is all about weirdos from all over the world coming together to cosplay as their favorite characters and party with like-minded people.
