new year’s resolutions – 5 great gyms for getting fit in 2012

All those who pack running shoes and yoga pants but rarely use them, raise your hand. Thankfully, this is the internet, so no one has to know your secret. But 2012 is going to be different, right? Here are my top five tried-and-tested in-hotel fitness facilities.

The amazing, massive (over 43,000 sq. ft.) zen spa at the Dolder Grand in Zurich features a great gym, indoor and outdoor pools, and loads of treatment rooms with changing color schemes. Best of all, the spiraled meditation room, a sort of sacred inner sanctum of the hotel, allows you a quiet space to reflect on your sins and think about the healthier life you are about to begin.

The Four Seasons Hotel Ritz is built atop one of seven hills in Lisbon. The glass-walled fitness room on the rooftop of the building offers spectacular views of the entire city, including the Tagus river and bridge in the back. For those that loathe treadmills, but don’t want to leave the hotel, there’s a 400-meter outdoor running track. There is also separate yoga rooms and a fully-equipped Pilates studio.

In keeping with the theme that external, rather than internal, motivators have a stronger pull, the Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay in Turkey offers astounding views over Bodrum and the Aegean Sea. If that’s not enough to push you towards a 6-minute mile, you can also enlist the aid of one of their fitness instructors.

Sure, dodging people on the streets of India’s most populous city could be considered enough of a workout, but you’ll have to do more than that to draw Lance Armstrong comparisons. The 24-hour gym at the The Oberoi Mumbai offers excellent equipment and good views from its plot of land along the Arabian Sea, not to mention a quiet space to collect one’s thoughts.

The best-equipped hotel gym I’ve seen is at Mauritius’ Royal Palm. Surrounded by impressive palm trees, it features a separate gym and spa area. The long list of options at the sports center includes cardio, circuit training, Kinesis, yoga, Pilates, Power Plate and weight-lifting equipment. There’s also tennis (three floodlit courts for that) and squash. And that’s not even taking into consideration all the water sports.
