Duke Energy Indiana seeks proposals for solar energy

PLAINFIELD, Ind. – Duke Energy Indiana has issued a request for proposals for companies interested in supplying the company with solar energy.

The request is for capacity, energy, and renewable energy credits from one or more solar electric generating facilities that could provide up to five megawatts of electric power to customers.

Companies can submit proposals for one large facility, or aggregate smaller facilities of no less than 250 kilowatts each, up to five megawatts.

In order of preference, the facilities should be located first in Duke Energy Indiana’s 69-county service territory; second, in the portion of Indiana that lies within the control of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO; and third, anywhere in Indiana.

Duke Energy Indiana committed to adding more green power to its energy mix as part of a legal settlement reached in August with consumer groups regarding the company’s Edwardsport coal gasification power plant’s air permits.

One alternative under the agreement was to build or contract for 15 megawatts of a combination of wind and/or solar energy.

Duke Energy has already entered into an agreement with Purdue University to purchase 10 megawatts of power from its planned wind farm in Tippecanoe County. That agreement must still be approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

Duke Energy Indiana’s operations provide approximately 6,900 megawatts of owned electric capacity to approximately 790,000 customers, making it the state’s largest electric supplier. More information about the company is available at: www.duke-energy.com.
