Minor Spoilage Lay Ahead

When you attend Comic Con, you have the opportunity to check out some really cool up-and-coming comic books and meet their creators. One of my highlights of this year’s NYCC was meeting the team behind a book called The Agency. We chatted with Ruben Romero, who with his wife, Bethany Romero and Roger Cabrera, created series. I also had the opportunity to speak with artist Eric Koda, who had just arrived from the West Coast. Meeting these enthusiastic individuals is what really helps me get behind these indie titles. Having a killer story line doesn’t hurt either! The Agency does all of the that and more! So why do I really dig this series so far? Maybe it’s the fact that the bad guys, The Horus,  are based off of Egyptian deities. Being a huge fan of Stargate, my wife and I named our dog Anubis. So you can see where I’m coming from when I say, “I’m a fan”.

The Agency Preview pageThe Agency is based in a world where magic exists and is very prevalent. So much so, there’s an organization within the Government that deals with it. The main characters form an “Agency” called the I.A.M. (International Agency of Magic), each sect having their own distinguished abilities. There are hundreds of these “sects”, all with different scopes of powers. The ones introduced so far are very cool and creative, I can’t wait to see what else they come up with in the future! The I.A.M. continues the great legacy of comic book teams fighting the supernatural, such as Men in Black, R.I.P.D., the B.R.P.D., and more!

Led by the mysterious Embry Eskyll, the I.A.M. is responsible for protecting the world from magical threats. Their operation acts as our Government sanctioned defense when it comes to saving the world, and we are all the better for it. The Agency features a main four person team led by Victoria Winter and the agents working under her are Remo, Paul, and Ayo. Even though you are introduced to a bunch a characters rather quickly, the story does a good job at distinguishing them into the narrative. Each one of the agents is an interesting character and we would all greatly benefit from seeing some back story mini-series’ based on each of them. Soon we meet young Riley, who has a special disposition for magic use. The team takes him into their protective custody and right away we see Riley starting to develop and learn to control his powers. I don’t want to ruin too much for you because I really enjoyed the dynamics between all of the characters. It’s just something you have to read on your own. Each are well developed, and so far my favorite is Remo. He reminds me a little bit of Constantine, his power set is also one of my favorites introduced so far. Though I do like the idea of “Staffers”! The Horus are mysterious and dangerous, and like I said before, I am a big fan of basing characters off Egyptian lore. Once Riley is introduced, these two factions battle it out to get their hands on the kid. I can’t wait to find out why, but so far Riley seems to have some amazing powers!

The Agency offers mystery, action, and intrigue; along with a heavy dose of magic wielding. What more can you ask for?! This comic offers a great launch through its first three issues as the story flows very well. I am looking forward to seeing what’s next! Artist, Eric Koda delivers some really great character designs and translates all of the action very well! The colors by Ross Hughes are bright and beautiful, this was definitely one of the things about this book that stood out to me the most. The creative trio of Romero, Romero, and Cabrera really have a hit on their hands! I know I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Currently issue #4 is in production and will be released on December 17th! The third issue of The Agency was just released on the 15th of October, check that out along with the first two over at Comixology! You can check out more of The Agency by visiting the Official Website!
