Back to School!

I have a plan, a plan that’s going to take me 5 years!

As I’ve mentioned I’m leaving my job working in sports (tomorrow!).  Since I first did an internship in college I’ve worked in professional sports in some capacity or another (PR, Community Relations, Event Presentation…) and I’ve gone from minor league teams to working for an Original 6 NHL team.  I’ve met a lot of great people and have gotten to do a lot of really cool things…

But I’ve always known working in professional sports wasn’t “IT” for me…

I feel like I’ve been searching for what I’m supposed to be doing since high school.  In college I majored in Communications because, well..why not!??  My junior year the professor of my sports journalism class suggested an internship with a local minor league team and the rest is history (well except for the year I thought I wanted to be a teacher and left to do a graduate program in education.  That didn’t last long…do you have any idea how many kids there are at schools?!?!)

In the past year I really recognized that it was time for me to move on and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what that move was going to be.  I searched for jobs and kept finding stuff that would be “ok”.  I didn’t want to settle for just “ok”, I really felt like if I was going to do this it was time to find something better than ok.  Hopefully I’ve found it, and  I really think running helped…

I’ve been running for almost a year and a half now.  During my training I’ve learned about muscles I never knew I had, following a training plan, foam rolling, tapering before a race and fueling for a long run.  I’ve read books, blogs, magazine articles, talked to other runners and learned a lot through trial and error.  I’m not a fast runner by any means, but I trained for and completed my first half marathon and full marathon within 8 months of when I started running and I just can’t get enough information, I really do love it!

So, let’s back up a few years…at one point (maybe around 2005?) I decided to go back to school for Physical Therapy.  I really thought it would be a career I’d love and be fulfilled by.  I took one class towards the pre-requisites I needed and had enough of school.  I had only finished my undergraduate degree a few years earlier and was overwhelmed by the time it would take be to become a physical therapist, I just wasn’t up for it at the time.

Well, I think it’s time to try again.  It’s going to take me 5 years, but I’m going to go back to school for Physical Therapy (again).  I think the fact that after all this time it’s still a career I’m interested in means a lot, and on top of that I have a renewed interest in anatomy, movement and treatment because of my running and training.  I’ve done my research and talked to several physical therapists who all spoke very highly about their profession and were very encouraing about my decision to go back to school.

That being said, it’s 5 YEARS OF SCHOOL!  And primarily sciences at that.  But, this is something I want to do and I know if I don’t give it a try I’ll regret it.  So, I’m putting a plan down “on paper” (or “on blog”) and adding it to my “GOALS” page so I can keep checking in and keep myself accountable (for the NEXT. FIVE. YEARS.).

Coming soon…THE 5 YEAR PLAN!

    • Thanks Tam, talking to you about your experience going back to school was definitely encouraging! P.S. – hopefully I’ll have some time to train for a triathlon now too!
