MENDIP HILLS 31 – LOOKING EAST TOWARDS THE SOUTHERN SLOPES OF NORTH HILL (MONO)

Looking east towards the southern slopes of North Hill
.
The view east from East Water Lane, towards the southern spur of North Hill; 7 Aug 2014.

A bullock grazes in a field bounded by a dry stone wall.

The high ground behind is a vague spur coming south from North Hill towards the wonderfully named Underbarrow Farm – sounds like something out The Hobbit!  This name presumably reflects the numerous Bronze Age burial mounds or barrows, all of which date from around 4,000 years ago, on the high hill crests left of this photo.  One line of these mounds is called Priddy Nine Barrows, a name that resonates from my youth, 50 years ago, when I was a greatly interested in this area’s geology and extensive cave systems.

Tiny black dots on the hillside above the wall are crows.

Very much a horizontally banded picture – the sky, the dark scrub, the shadows, the field above the wall, the wall, the field below the wall, the dip in this field – with the bullock looking just like a statue that has been placed there for effect.

D800 with 70-300 Nikkor at 300mm; 200 ISO; Silver Efex Pro 2, starting at the Strong Infrared Low Contrast preset.

  1. Yep – it’s those bands of light and shade that add so much, plus of course the cow. Strategically placed and facing the right way – and he is neatly balanced top left by that upright tree. Nicely little touch, that, Adrian.

    • Cows??? Well you were only one letter out, lady, could happen to anyone …

Glad you like it – thanks! And now I think smoked haddock fishcakes for breakfast, with hot lime pickle – sets a man up for the day, y’know, good as a dose of salts!!! 🙂

        • Haha, I thought that would stir you up! Please understand that this is not a Brit dish at all, it is a FATman dish, and things that I wolf down can be weird and wonderful – as my wife will bear vast testament to!

I hope this new week treats you well, ATP. On Thurs I’m meeting the second of my school days chums who were instrumental in getting me into birding in 1967 – he and his wife are over from California. ATP xxx

  2. A masterpiece. I say no more.

I hope you’re fine, my dear friend. I’ve been busy lately (and some health problems too) so I haven’t been as active as I should have been…

    • Malin. I do hope you’re ok, my friend – although we only meet “virtually”, I do worry about you and your health – I hope you’re recovered now. I’m ok – just played my first table tennis for 24 years – well for more like 40 years really – and survived it physically better than I thought I would!!! I hope to play regularly – I certainly need the exercise.

And thank you for your very good words. Take good care of yourself. A 🙂
