Diversity in Motion Comics: The Last Days of Kartika

kartika

There’s a new superhero in town, and her name is Dusky Diana. Her story is being told by combining the medium of motion comics and hip hop music.

Dusky Diana is trying to help the city of Kartika during their darkest days. In the first of seven web episodes, Diana goes up against the Phercy Corporations. Her mettle is tested when she’s challenged by one of the Corporations’ agents.

I love the concept of this comic. I’m super excited by the musical aspect of it! I think telling her story through funk, soul and hip hop is genius. I also love that the series is extremely racially diverse. The majority of super heroes in comics are white, so it’s really amazing and powerful to see a strong woman of color as the heroine. The writer, Wi-Moto Nyoka, is a hugely accomplished actor and writer; she’s received many awards and grants for her work.

You can watch all seven episodes now, and I’m super excited to see what’s next for Dusky Diana.

The creators have released a track of the music for the series, which you can check out here. You can visit the writer’s website here and the Vimeo page for the series here.
