  1. The only reason Tylar took the plea deal was because she was a child when the murder occurred, and this country doesn’t like seeing juveniles getting life without parole. Also, Steven and Tylar were just five years apart! Big deal! If he was old enough to be Joanne’s age and Tylar was young enough to be a baby, then yes, he would be a pedophile. If Tylar and Steven consented to the sexual actiuvity, then it’s not rape! It’s only rape if only one of them wanted the sex and the other didn’t! Age is nothing but a number except in that example above.

    • Karen,

The age thing you said is not exactly correct. It is rape for anyone under the age of consent. A 12 year old cannot consent, whether he/she wants sex or not. Be careful, as you came close to being okay with pedophiles. Under 16 is usually considered a child. Tylar was NOT a child, she was a teenager. Tylar have been 16 years old, but that does not make her a “child”, especially when she does an adult act. So, please drop the “age is nothing but a number” since it does not work in most situations.

  2. Still, this country doesn’t like juveniles being locked up for life. Whoever said “Age is nothing but a number” should have thought about this thoroughly. I know singer Aaliyah had a song and an album titled “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number”, but she probably didn’t coin the phrase.

  3. Why does this country seem to think that juvenile offenders can be rehabilitated and learn from thier mistakes, but adult offenders can’t? That’s ridiculous.

    • I agree. Kids are killing parents, classmates and innocent people just because its the ‘norm’ thing to do whenever things don’t go their way

  4. Mylifeofcrime, you obviously haven’t been to the Third World countries where girls that are younger than Tylar get married off to guys who are much older than Steven. These older men should also be jailed for statutatory rape, but they never do. The philosophy “Age ain’t nothing but a number” doesn’t apply here, and the girls’ parents don’t care about their well-being, or they would let their daughters live their childhoods without this stigma.

    • Karen,

Please understand that my blog is about crime in the US and I do not research other countries and their customs for it. So what happens in other countries has no effect on my opinions of crime in the US. My concern here is Joanne Witt. She is the victim here and she is the one to be remembered.
