Now as we continue the Journey through Luke 7:1-17, we read about two accounts of both the compassion and power of Jesus. The first account is when Jesus entered Capernaum. A centurion had a servant who was sick and he cared greatly about his servant. A centurion was a Roman soldier during that time and was in charge of maybe 100 other soldiers.

The humble Roman soldier recognized the healing power of Jesus and had so much faith that he said Jesus could simply say the word and his servant would be healed (v. 7). Jesus was amazed at the faith of the centurion (v. 9). The men who had been sent to Jesus by the centurion returned to find that the dying servant had been healed and that Jesus had indeed demonstrated his power over sickness.

Then Jesus, His disciples, and a large crowd following went to a town called Nain. When they entered the town, they came upon a funeral procession. It was the funeral of the only son of a widow and a large crowd from the town was with her.

Jesus felt compassion upon the mother and went over to the coffin, touched it, and brought the son back to life. The people were filled with awe and news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country (v. 17).

For our short time on earth, we should want our life to count. Our faith will be tested, but as we have learned today, there is a great power available. Lord, in the passage today, we read about two accounts of Your power over sickness and even death. Each day we arise, we can be thankful because we have access to a mighty strength and the blessing of the Trinity. With You, there is strength, might, and wisdom. God, we choose above all else to live this day with You.
