2008 Moppity Vineyards Reserve Shiraz

Hilltops 14.5% Screwcap $60 Source: Sample

Well, hello. Brilliant wine this and one that makes me so happy to say that I’m a fan of a little ‘V’ in my Shiraz…3% in this case, co-fermented of course. Some whole bunch action, matured in French oak puncheons for ten months, 25% of which were new.

It’s a spice-fest for sure; but it’s so much more than that. Full bodied for a Hilltops wine but never in any danger of excess. It’s still a wine to luxuriate in, with aromas that make you swoon. Intense florals, mulberries and blackberries vie for attention beside chocolate covered plums, star anise and gingerbread.

The mouth feel is impossibly seductive, slinky and so gorgeous you don’t want to swallow..let alone spit! Super fine tannins with a hint of sappiness draw every last bit of flavour out of the finish, leaning brown spices, pepper and, once you’ve finished the bottle, delectable memories. There are meaty and savoury qualities on the palate too, further enhancing the complexity. Extraordinary. Released November 1st. I’ll be buying some more.
