Feeling Insecure?

A weekly devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb

According to an article in Monday’s Wall Street Journal, global insecurity has reached a high we haven’t seen since the 1970’s. The “arc of instability” is the result of Russia’s actions in the Ukraine, twin civil wars in Iraq and Syria, and most recently fighting in Gaza. Political experts are optimistic the present administration will be able to stem the growing tide of instability but no one is making any promises.

In a world of insecurity, where is a person to go for hope? In the book of Hebrews we find these words of encouragement, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and steadfast.” The words “firm and steadfast” reference that which is certain and trustworthy. Here we have a promise given to everyone that hinges on the object and definition of “this hope”. The context of Hebrews informs us that “this hope” is none other than the person and work of Jesus Christ. When we acknowledge Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we have an anchor for the soul.

Only in Christ can we rest security even when others are telling us we are living under the “arc of instability.”
