The group climbed on to the building using ladders and ropes in the early hours of Tuesday and unfurled a banner advertising their website.

The police said they arrived by 7am.

At 8pm during the first day of the protest, one of the group, Archi Ssan, 53 from Streatham, climbed down and handed himself over to police.

A Met spokesman said that he was detained “on suspicion of aggravated trespass, causing a public nuisance and suspicion of criminal damage”.

In a statement posted on the New Fathers 4 Justice website, the group said: “We intend to peacefully protest for more than one day and we have ample supplies…

“If any attempt is made to apprehend us prior to when we are ready to come down, we will resist”.

New Fathers 4 Justice was formed in 2008 and is not affiliated with the original Fathers 4 Justice set up by Matt O’Connor.

The group campaigns for the equal rights of fathers to see their children and in favour of reforming the present Family Justice System.

The protesters on the Apsley House gate, who include a woman and two Frenchmen, said: “We’re responsible protesters and our rules are simple – no damage and no abuse… We urge the authorities not to conduct any act which may compromise our safety”.
