Israeli Forces Suppress Anti-Buffer Zone Protest in Gaza

WAFA FEB 28 2012

GAZA, February 28, 2012 (WAFA) – Israeli forces Tuesday suppressed a peaceful demonstration against the buffer zone between Israel and the Gaza Strip near Beit Hanoun, north of Gaza, according to participants in the weekly protest.

They said soldiers stationed at army towers overlooking the buffer zone fired tear gas and sound bombs at the protesters, causing dozens of suffocation cases.

Gaza residents often protest against the buffer zone, which is a military no-go area that extends along the entire northern and eastern perimeter of the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel and goes deep into the Palestinian Territory at a range of between 500 meters to two kilometers.

The buffer zone encompasses 30% of Gaza’s agricultural land and around 27,000 dunums, according to the Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights.

Palestinians, mainly farmers and landowners, are denied access to the land; whereas Israeli forces use live fire against anyone within the buffer zone.
