Israeli forces have closed the al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) after Israeli settlers initiated clashes with Palestinian worshippers at the site.

The clashes erupted on Sunday morning after dozens of settlers entered the holy site and scuffled with the worshippers. Israeli forces intervened and clashed with the Palestinians in the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Several Palestinians and Israeli forces were injured during the clashes.

Police detained three Palestinians inside the compound, Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said.

Israeli forces also closed all the entrances to the compound, keeping dozens of worshippers inside.

Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is one of the holiest sites in Islam, has been the scene of clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian worshipers in the course of the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Tel Aviv.
