Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians (NCYM) has just finished its first year!

NCYM staff are appointed by the Guildhall in partnership with the Norfolk Music Service and we run a range of activities for students aged 8 – 18. The emphasis is on encouraging enthusiastic and able musicians to take part in a full morning of musical activities. We are presently running 3 choirs, a range of string/wind ensembles from grade 2 – grade 8+, improvisation sessions, general musicianship classes, classical guitar/percussion groups, theory and a tango band! Individual lessons are also available on some instruments.

Regular workshops with Guildhall staff/students are held. Highlights so far have been:

The appointment of John-Paul Bowman, composer in residence from Guildhall School and plans to develop composition in partnership with Guildhall staff and students
· A Brass workshop with the Guildhall Brass Quintet
· A combined Jazz workshop with NCYM and NMS
· A conducting workshop with Peter Nash, resident conductor of the LSSO
· A soprano recital/Q&A session with Freya Jacklin and Marion Caldwell
· A French Horn workshop
· A visit from 13 young musicians from Purcell School

We are delighted that during these first three terms NCYM students have gained places at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Aldeburgh Young Musicians and Britten Sinfonia Academy.

In September we plan to extend the day and launch an NCYM orchestra which will meet on Saturday afternoons for ten weeks each term and are delighted to announce that we have now appointed a conductor for this .

Paul Warburton has had a highly successful career as a professional musician working for 16 years with the City of Birmingham Symphony orchestra under Simon Rattle and undertaking a range of concerts, recordings and TV/Radio broadcasts. Other work includes Soloists of Covent Garden, Opera North, English String Orchestra and Glyndebourne Opera. He is now living locally and increasingly in demand as a performer and conductor.

Paul has been working for the NCYM since we started in Autumn 2013 and we have already seen one of his students gain a place at a leading music conservatoire. We are delighted he has accepted the post and very much look forward to seeing the orchestra develop.
