In his first appearance in the Sound It Out series as a leader, drummer-composer Jeff Davis heads his ace quartet Holyoke featuring saxophonist Tony Malaby, pianist Russ Lossing and bassist Eivind Opsvik – each a Sound It Out favorite as leaders in their own right. The New York Times has called Jeff “a drummer and composer of sure footing but adventurous inclination.” About the band’s name and its music, Jeff says: “The name Holyoke comes from the small prairie town in Northern Colorado where I was born. It’s tiny, in the middle of nowhere, with big, open skies and an endless landscape, completely open to the elements. You can see for miles in any direction. There is a duality to this place – seemingly peaceful, yet intense and unguarded at the same time. It is with this spirit in mind, this place, this sense of intimate expanse, that I present this music.” Jeff made an excellent appearance at the epic “Motian in Motion” tribute concert this summer in the Sound It Out series, and Bruce Gallanter of Downtown Music Gallery, a listener who knows his stuff, calls Jeff “one of Downtown’s best drummers.”
