Mary Hades has been admitted to the mental hospital after an incident at her school. She sees things, and for her the day time is when monsters are most real. Unlike most of us she isn’t afraid of the dark or what hides in the shadows. Her monsters are with her during the day and she sees them out of the corner of her eye. She is on a daily dose of anti psychotics to keep the monsters at bay. But sometimes even the drugs won’t keep her from seeing them.
After a week or so at the hospital Mary has made many friends and she still sees things. She sees a boy named Johnny, has conversations with him, and starts to learn that she isn’t afraid of the dark at all. What she is afraid of is the darkness, of being alone and without someone to be close with. Then the truth hits Mary hard when she learns from her roommate that Johnny died long before she arrived at the hospital. Now she knows she doesn’t see things, she sees ghosts and wonders why they appear to her and what they are trying to tell her. Mary and her friends have noticed that too many people are leaving the hospital, not alive but dead. She has become suspicious that they are not dying from natural causes. One of the others in her ward dies and now she is sure something is wrong.
My Daylight Monsters has a very good group of characters, all with their own quirks and oddities. They are in the hospital for various reasons and cling together in a tight group. Sarah Dalton makes their daily life with therapies come to life. The doctors and other patients fill in the background and make the hospital environment realistic. The tension as Mary works to discover why her friend died and what Johnny really is up to adds greatly to the story. Who can she trust and why are people dying more and more frequently is the question she is now faced with. I very much enjoyed the story of Mary and was invested so much I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

Summer is coming to an end and Mary is off to the county for a week of camping. She still sees the things, the warnings her minds conjures up when something bad is about to happen. She is rattled and almost cancels her date with Seth but decides to go in hope that it will ease her mind. While on the Ferris wheel she and Seth are stuck at the top and his best friend dies trying to get them down. Now two deaths in two days has Mary unnerved. She and Lacey learn that deaths of boys and men have been happening for the past five years. She starts to think that death isn’t following her but attached to her and starts to see the things again.
Mary isn’t the only one who can see ghosts, Seth can see them too and now the mystery has really begun for Mary. With Mary, Lacey, Seth and a few friends they work to uncover the cause of the deaths and why a ghost is following her. Mary Hades is a fun ghost story, it’s also about a tragic death and what it takes to set the ghost at ease. It’s a bit of a coming of age story mixed with an episode of ghost hunters. Lacey learns more about her existence as a ghost and where we go after death. I had a hard time putting this one down and became really wrapped up in Mary’s quest to help the girl who is now a ghost. This series is really a fun read and now after reading the first two books in the series I’m looking forward to what awaits Mary next. Sarah Dalton does a great job creating characters and when the book is finished you miss them and wonder what they are doing now.
