Conducting a Competitive Analysis

The first step in the process for any crowdfunding campaign manager is to perform a competitive analysis to see what the competitors are currently doing in the marketplace.  It is wise to look closely at campaigns that have been very successful as well as campaigns that have failed to determine what strategies might give your campaign the best chance for success. Use Google to search “most successful crowdfunding campaigns“or “biggest crowdfunding campaign failures.” [Click to Tweet]

What to Search for?
Look closely at funding goals, headlines, sub-headlines, pitch videos,  perks/rewards being offered, profile body copy, as well as the photos, infographics, time lines, stretch goals, and FAQ sheets being offered. These are great sources for generating your own creative ideas. Take notes on a yellow pad or type them into a  word document as you conduct research.

Crowdfunding Competitive Analysis Research Tools
CF4all.comCrowdfundingfusion.com and KickSpy.com are cool new tools that allow crowdfunding campaign managers to search popular crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo and group searches by categories, success rates and many other categories of information. Not all encompassing, but a very good start.

Top 100 Crowdfunding Sites
Another useful tool for doing research is the Crowdfunding Press Center’s List of the Top 100 Crowdfunding Sites. Click on each site and then search for your SEO keywords to see what types of crowdfunding campaigns are currently running on each platform that are similar to the campaign you want to launch. This is great way to see what the competition is doing.
