Wheeler, Alice         1888 August 18th              Chippenham

An inquest was held at the workhouse, on Monday afternoon, by Mr Coroner Browne on the body of Alice Wheeler, aged 21, a nurse maid in the employ of Mr C Wilks, of the New Inn, New Road, Chippenham.

It appeared from the evidence that the deceased was out on Saturday afternoon last with a perambulator and two children, but when near the bottom of Pew-hill she went to cross the road right in front of a horse and trap, driven by Henry Matthews, of Foxham.

Matthews pulled up the horse as hard as he could, but not before it had knocked the deceased and the perambulator over, and so suddenly as to pitch the occupants of the trap out and throw the horse down. The deceased was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the workhouse, but despite every care never rallied.

The jury were of opinion that it was a pure accident, and returned a verdict of “Accidentally killed.” They gave their fees to the parents of the deceased young woman.
