Man Knocked Down on The Line

On Tuesday afternoon a serious accident happened at a level crossing on the L & SWR between Downton and Breamore. A coal merchant named George Hooper was driving over the crossing when a train coming from Wimborne ran by. It smashed the cart to pieces and Hooper was flung to the ground. The train was stopped and some men who were working near heard the crash and went to the scene of the accident. They picked Hooper up and finding he was seriously injured, placed him on the train and he was taken to Salisbury Infirmary. On examination it was found he had severe scalp wounds and that his condition was serious. On enquiring at the institution our representative has been informed that he is now progressing favourably. Strange to say, the horse he was driving escaped unhurt.
